In today's environment, members of the Board of Directors or Finance and Audit committees hold a fiduciary role to ensure resources are managed effectively, to focus on achieving the organization's mission and goals, and to monitor the organization's programs and services to maintain its financial strength.

Also, the Sarbanes Oxley Act and its implications for non-profit organizations have created a higher expectations for what will be considered effective governance of non-profit organizations. In order to perform these duties effective, Boards and committees members must have financial expertise. Unfortunately, in many cases they do not.
